Equipment

  • Slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dry lentils
  • 2 cups chopped onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 cups beef broth or 8 beef bouillon cubes combined with 8 cups of water
  • 1 can tomatoes, cut up 14.5 ounce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon thyme or oregano crushed
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped optional
  • 1 meaty ham bone or 1 pound chopped ham

Instructions

  • Put the ham bone in the crock pot (slow cooker) or chop up the ham and add it to the crock pot.
  • Chop up the onions, carrots, and celery, if using. Add the chopped vegetables to the slow cooker.
  • Mince the garlic cloves and add to the crock pot along with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Set the slow cooker on low heat and let the soup cook for six to eight hours.
  • If you are using a ham bone, just before serving, take the bone out and set it in a bowl to cool. Remove any remaining meat from the bone and return the meat (not the bone) to the slow cooker.
