Why I Love Making Pizza Dough in the Bread Machine

Homemade pizza from scratch is a labor of love, and well worth the time it takes for the homemade dough to rise. I love making pizza dough in the bread machine for many reasons. The machine takes care of the mixing, kneading, and even the proofing, ensuring consistent, high-quality results with minimal effort. All you have to do is add the ingredients, press a button, and let the machine do the work, leaving your hands free for other tasks. It eliminates the mess of flour-covered countertops and sticky dough, while also providing the perfect warm environment for the dough to rise. Whether you’re crafting a traditional crust, thin crust, or experimenting with whole wheat or gluten-free options, a bread machine makes it simple to customize recipes to suit your taste. I highly recommend it!

Bread Machine Pizza Dough Equipment

My bread machine is a vintage Toastmaster Model 1195. When I began using it years ago, I quickly realized that the main labor-saving benefit was found in the dough making, whether for homemade rolls, loaves, or pizza crust. I preferred (and still prefer) to shape and bake the dough in the regular oven. Today’s bread machines may have twice as many settings, but they still function the same way as my trusty Toastmaster. If you are considering purchasing a bread machine, there are many options, like this basic, colorful model.

Other equipment you will need for this recipe includes basic kitchen measuring tools, a saucepan (if you are making your own pizza sauce), and one or two pizza pans. Mine have holes in the bottom, similar to these.

For serving the pizza, a rolling pizza wheel slicer is nice to have.

Bread Machine Pizza Dough Ingredients

To make this delicious bread machine pizza dough recipe, you will need:

1 and 2/3 cups water

2 tablespoons oil (I use canola oil most of the time, but sometimes add in a bit of olive oil)

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons dry milk

4 and 1/2 cups bread flour

2 teaspoons active dry yeast (make sure it is not past its expiration date)

These ingredients make enough dough for two pizza crusts.

Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Sauce

If you would like to make your own pizza sauce, here’s my easy recipe.

2 6-ounce cans tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder

1/2-1 teaspoon sugar (or to taste)

1/4 cup water

Topping Options

You can top your pizza any way you prefer. Popular options include shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, fresh sliced peppers, onions, Italian sausage, sliced olives, sliced mushrooms, Canadian bacon, or pineapple chunks. The beauty of making your own homemade pizza is that the topping combinations can be as varied as you like.

Bread Machine Pizza Dough Instructions

Place the ingredients in the machine in the order listed (this is important). Use the dough setting on your bread machine.

While the bread machine is mixing the pizza dough, mix all ingredients in a small saucepan. Stir and heat on medium until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a boil. Set aside to cool and use on your pizzas when they are ready for toppings.

When the dough cycle has almost completed, grease two round pizza pans. (I like to use the wrapper from a stick of butter and dip it in butter-flavored Crisco to grease.)

When the cycle has completed, remove the dough from the bread machine pan. Divide the dough in half.

Rotating the dough as you stretch it, turn each pan in a circular motion until the edge of the dough reaches the edge of the pan. Raise the edge of the dough slightly.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Spread pizza sauce over the dough, then sprinkle with the toppings of your choice.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown around the edges.

Pizza Dough without a Bread Machine

Can you make this pizza dough recipe without a bread machine? Yes! Just mix the ingredients in a large bowl (you could use a stand mixer with a bread hook, if you have one).  Cover the bowl of dough and let it rise for an hour. From there, follow the instructions for shaping the dough and decorating it with toppings.
