Variations of Blueberry Cobbler

Some blueberry cobbler recipes use oatmeal. Others use Bisquick or cake mix. I’m sure those are all very yummy. This recipe just uses pantry staples like sugar, flour, and oil. It’s nothing fancy, but the topping is similar to flaky pie crust in a way. Give it a try and see what I mean. Here’s what you need to make it.

Ingredients

4 cups blueberries

1 and 1/4 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1 and 1/4 cup flour

1 tablespoon sugar

3/4 to 1 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup oil

1/4 cup milk

How to Make Easy Blueberry Cobbler

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Have a 13-inch by 9-inch baking dish ready to use. My favorite rectangular baking dish has a plastic lid, perfect for covering the cobbler later if there is any left.

Rinse and drain the blueberries.

Put blueberries in a large skillet along with the 1 and 1/4 cup sugar. Mix in the cinnamon. I like to mash the berries just a bit with my trusty round masher.

Bring to a boil over medium heat, then pour the berry mixture into the baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix together.

Add the oil and milk. Mix to make a soft dough.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Blueberry Cobbler Variation

To convert this easy blueberry cobbler recipe into a gluten-free and dairy-free version, just make a couple of substitutions. Use a gluten-free flour mix such as the kind you can substitute on a one-to-one basis for regular flour. You can also substitute almond milk, cashew milk, or another kind of dairy-free milk for the regular milk in the recipe.

Patriotic Blueberry Cobbler Option

To make give this blueberry cobbler a patriotic flair, serve it with vanilla ice cream. Then top it with homemade raspberry syrup. Presto! Now you have a red, white, and blueberry patriotic dessert.

Can Frozen Blueberries be Used in this Easy Blueberry Cobbler Recipe?

Of course! Most of the time, I do use frozen berries. I have a goal each year to use up last year’s berries in the freezer before adding any from the current year. Most of the time, it helps me avoid what I call Berry Buildup. I even wrote a post about amazing ways to use frozen berries. Making easy blueberry cobbler with frozen blueberries is definitely one of my favorite strategies.

Can I Substitute Other Fruit for the Blueberries?

Yes! In fact, I’ll let you in on a secret. This easy blueberry cobbler recipe was originally for blackberries! We used to be plagued with blackberry bushes around the perimeter of our pasture. Thanks to my husband’s diligence, we no longer have many blackberries to harvest. I use blueberries instead. I’ve also used raspberries or a mixture of berries. Any combination of berries would be delightful!

How to Store Leftovers (If There Are Any!)

When we have had our fill, if there is any left, I cover it and refrigerate it. If we had the cobbler when it was still warm (what a delight) I make sure it’s cooled completely before refrigerating. We consider ourselves lucky if we have leftovers, so the cobbler stays in the refrigerator no longer than another day. If, for some strange reason, we forgot about the leftover cobbler in the refrigerator, it will keep for a week. For this information, I’m relying on what I’ve read elsewhere over the years. I personally have no experience with cobbler lasting that long in the refrigerator. It disappears long before a week’s time.

What to Serve With Easy Blueberry Cobbler

Blueberry cobbler is delicious served with ice cream. Some people might prefer whipped cream. As noted above, we like to serve ours warm when possible.

What Else Can You Make with Frozen Berries?

I’m so grateful for our frozen berry supply. I use the berries in many different recipes. In addition to easy blueberry cobbler, I use frozen berries to make smoothies, gelato, jam, blueberry syrup, and blueberry hand pies. I wrote about all of those items in a post specifically about using frozen berries. Pies are also a great possibility with frozen berries. I also like to dry the berries in my food dehydrator, which I wrote about as well.

    • The touch of cinnamon really adds a pleasing flavor, and when I am gathering up the dough strips to lay on the top of the blueberry cobbler, I sometimes use the same big butcher knife I used to cut the dough to help me scrape the strips off of the cutting board and gently use the flat part of the knife to move the strips into position. Hope this helps. Happy cobbler making!
